The search for an alternate one isn't holding up the present one,
but the fact that the RCA amplifier module has developed an
intermittent fault might. It looks like we'll have to send it back
for repair or replacement.

I visited SRI today, ostensibly to copy the literature about small
electric vehicles that Steven Coles collected for the now defunct
SRI robot project. While there I mentioned that we would be interested
in buying (or whatever) any parts of Shakey that weren't needed,
escpecially the TV transmitter and reciever. He (Coles) was enthusiastic,
stating that it would make him much happier to see them furthering
robot research than collecting dust, and he even offered to include
Shakey's camera (which has remote focus and iris controls). We then
went to see Peter Hart with this proposal. He was considerably less
excited about it, and stated that there would undoubtedly be a use
at SRI for the camera, but the only objections he could come up with
concerning the transmitter were that a) since the robot was government
property, it might be hard to arrange the transfer (the video link
is not EDP equipment, he said) and b) It would probably take us a
long time to get an FCC permit to run it. He also said (it seemed
half-hearted to me) that he would look into it. I threatened him
with a call from you. The rumor about Shakey going to the Smithsonian
is just that, and virtually nothing has been done about it.

I believe that we should remove the restriction whereby network users are not
allowed to use APE or HOT.
I suggest that our practice in this respect is inconsistent with our policy of
providing neat hacks for the net at low cost to ourselves.
Moreover, since we are apparently not pursuing this matter with the AP, we
ought not claim "negotiations in progress" (like Nixon) as the reason we
don't allow network users on.

WE WOULD PREFER IF YOUR SEMINAR WILL BE GIVEN ON AP.24, THIS WILL ALLOW
US TO PUT IT ON CIT CALANDER. IT IS TOO LATE FOR THE AP.17, AND WE WILL
NOT BE ABLE TO DISTRIBUTE THE MESSAGE OF THE TALK AS IT IS DONE BY THE
CALANDER.
IN CASE THAT YOU CAN'∀T GIVE IT ON THE 24, LET'S NOT DELY IT FURTHER AND
WILL PLN TO HAVE IT ON AP.17.
DURING YOUR VISIT I WOULD LIKE YOU TO MEET SOME OF KEY FACULTY MEMBERS.
THUS IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU WILL BE HERE AT L¬LEAST FOR A FULL DAY BEFORE OR AFTER THE SEMINAR.
PLEASE LET US KNOW YOUR DECISION SOON, EITHER BY MESSAGE ON THE NET
(MSW) OR BY PHON. I WILL NOT BE IN NEXT WEEK AND PER BRINCH-HANSEN WILL
TAKE CARE OF ALL COMMUNICATION.
